I have had a Stihl MS250 with a 18" bar for several years. Recently I went back to the dealer to purchase a new bar and chains.

The service man brought me a bar and chains. The bar was correct, but the chains were too long. We checked and the 18" bar only had 16" of cutting length. He confirmed that he had the correct bar so we began checking the saws that he had on display.

All of the Stihl chainsaws that he had were 2 or more inches short compared to the stated length. He called Stihl and they said that Stihl measures their bar length from some point on the bar, not the cutting capability of the saw. We checked several other brands, and the cutting length of all of them was within 1/2" of the stated length.I ask if I could put a bar on the MS250 to give me 18" of cutting capacity, the factory said that that a MS250 is not capable of handling a bar and chain that can cut 18".I have no way of checking horsepower or cubic inches, but you have to question how they measure those standard comparison tools for chainsaws. This is pure and simple consumer fraud.

They put a 18" label on a 16" chainsaw, and price it higher than the competitors 16" saw and lower that the 18" saw.

I called Stihl customer service in Greensboro, NC. They are aware of the deception and made no apology nor did they give any reason for their labeling practices.

Monetary Loss: $300.
